I was concerned that the tree might be sick in some way, so I went in search of the groundskeeper, who told me that the elm trees on the property had gotten sick and died. Many felt betrayed and they denounced neoliberal policies for the hardships they faced. My father, who died five years ago, came through the Holocaust and still had this amazing and innocent zest for life.

We have high rates of depression, anxiety, and addiction in this country, but we have no sense of the sacred possibilities of our so-called illnesses. Successive administrations had introduced policy reforms that aimed to supplant the state-led economy of the preceding decades with a more market-led model of development. It occurs when our meaning system gets shattered and we have to construct a new one. Bergman still has a great deal of that upbringing left over for his other films, which often deal with mortality, guilt, sin, God and demons. Rather than being directed to jump back into our routines, we are given permission to move more organically through the grieving process.

Koen paints a lavish, carefully researched portrait of a young woman's turbulent coming of age in 18th-century England and France. The next day, the two of us stood on the steps of a downtown hotel—thinking that if violence erupted we could easily duck inside—and watched the protest. These two are not mutually exclusive.

This is not easily done, and may or may not provide greater insights into the future. But the day-to-day view from the street is often that of how much change occurs over the short term—and how abruptly it can occur—and of how contingent those changes are. The period was fascinating to research — I went through about books.
